Town of Kerrobert Confirms Animal Sighting Within Town Was Not Cougar

No Cougar Within Town Limits, Confirms Conservation Officer

Earlier this week there were sightings of what was thought to be a cougar in the residential area of Kerrobert.

Yesterday on Facebook the Town of Kerrobert announced that after speaking with the Conservation Officer in the area, it was confirmed that the animal sighting was not a cougar.

However, a cougar is in the area as a cougar has been sighted between Kerrobert and Luseland.

If you ever do encounter a cougar it is important to remember:

  • Don’t run. This makes you look like potential prey. Instead keep calm, stand up and look big. Shout loudly and throw something to distract the cougar.
  • Back away slowly, allowing a clear exit for the cougar. Pick up small children or pets. Avoid sudden movements.
  • If the cougar is watching you, maintain eye contact and speak in loud firm voice, reinforce you are a human.
  • If cougar attacks, fight back, anything such as rocks or sticks can be used as a weapon.

Cougars have extremely good vision and are ‘spot and stalk’ hunters. These big cats are the most evasive and secretive of all wildlife species within Saskatchewan. Generally cougars travel in low light when on the move.

If you see a cougar, please call 1-800-667-7561.
