'There are voices under the rubble': At least 73 dead in central Italy earthquake

Shallow quake, followed by dozens of aftershocks, flattens buildings in several towns

A strong earthquake in central Italy reduced three towns to rubble as people slept early Wednesday, with reports that at least 73 people were killed and hundreds injured as rescue crews raced to dig out survivors.

The ANSA news agency said 35 of the dead were in the town of Amatrice alone, with another 17 dead in the province of Ascoli Piceno, which includes Pescara del Tronto. It’s not clear where the other fatalities were.
