Water rescue crews called after dog falls through ice in Saskatoon

Saskatoon water rescue teams were called out to the South Saskatchewan River Monday afternoon after a dog fell through the ice.

The Saskatoon fire department received a call at around 3:30 p.m. CST that a dog had broken through the ice near the Sutherland Dog Park.

The animal’s owner saw the dog disappear through the ice about 20 feet off shore and guided the responding fire crew to the area. In a release, Saskatoon Fire and Protective Services said the riverbank was dangerous and the ice was thin.

The water rescue crew searched the river and the dog was eventually recovered. But the conditions had been too cold and the pet died.

The Saskatoon fire department is reminding people in Saskatoon to stay off of the ice and to be cautious on the riverbank, including with family pets.
