“Wonderful Weekend” – Goose Festival 2017

Kindersley’s 45th Goose Festival a “Wonderful Weekend”

Despite the sudden chilly weather of fall, Kindersley’s 45th Goose Festival still drew crowds from not only Kindersley but also from the smaller communities. Events like the horse pulls, the potato peeling and goose plucking contests, the popular Saturday Pa- rade and the wrap-up Antique Threshing made sure that there was a little something for everyone.

Kicking off the Festival on Thursday with the traditional hilarities, the downtown stage saw contests such as the great egg drop, the pie eating contest, potato peeling, and goose plucking contests. Contest winners included Sammy, Sadie and Devon Coles for the goose plucking and Lisa Padberg for the potato peeling contest.

Friday night saw, even more, action as the Kindersley Klippers took their first win of the season 7-5 over the Es- tevan Bruins and the Kobras’ first home game squashed the Martinsville Royals 22-1. Other sport events included an introduction to pickleball (a racquet sport that combines elements of badminton, tennis, and table tennis) the 2nd annual Ktown Shakedown Slo Pitch Tournament; and a heavy horse pull. For those more inclined to the whimsical, the Karaoke Contest drew many to the Kinder- sley Mall to compete, observe and shop at the craft and vendor booths also set up in the mall.

Brian Fankhanel carried the day at the heavy horse pulls as his team of Belgiums, Duke and Prince, pulled 8,000lbs on the flat-bottomed “boat.” This was only Duke and Prince’s second year pulling as a team, but they were certainly not without practise. “They have to earn their keep,” grinned Fankhanel, noting that the gentle giants loved giving sleigh and wagon rides to children. “They also help me harrow in the fall, pre-work the soil in the spring and rake hay in the summer.”

Saturday drew the biggest crowds as the morning parade, antique car show and shine, motorcycle show and shine, downtown climbing wall, family carnival and wrap up to the heavy horse pulls, and Karaoke contest had a little something for everyone. Matt Davis, Jeff Hill, and Mary Lou placed first, second and third in the Karaoke contest, wowing everyone with their previously undisclosed talent.

Entertainment included three different duos on the downtown stage, a screening of “The Big Sick” by the Kindersley Screen Arts, and the annual Goose Festival dance at the WCEC with the BC/DC band.

Sunday dawned clear and warm; early risers ate a hearty pancake breakfast put on by the Air Cadets then followed it up with pie á la mode and coffee at the Kindersley & District Museum during an antique threshing demonstra- tion by the Kindersley Antique Threshing Club.

“Overall, the festival went fabulous.” Heather Wall, execu- tive director of the Kindersley Chamber of Commerce, noted in a recent interview. “I was impressed with the number of contestants in the various contests and the pa- rade drew the biggest crowds we’ve seen in a long time. People seemed to enjoy themselves and the businesses in the area got some promotion, it was a wonderful weekend.”
