Confused by the ingredients in your dog food? You aren’t alone. Here are three things you should pay attention to:
- Prioritize proteins. Ingredients are listed in order of weight with the first ingredient being the largest amount. Look for a food that has one or two quality proteins listed within the first few ingredients.
- Be wary of marketing terms. Holistic doesn’t have a legal definition in the pet food industry, instead it implies the food contains additional ingredients to boost health. Natural typically implies that there are no additives, preservatives or artificial coloring’s or flavorings. Both of these terms are typically used as a marketing ploy and any company can use them.
- What does “guaranteed analysis” on your dog food label mean? This is a mandatory requirement that contains the labeled percentages of crude protein, fat, fibre, and moisture.
