Many in the athletic community have praised Canada’s move.

Canada became the first country to withdraw from the summer Olympics in Japan, citing the need to stop the spread of the sometimes deadly coronavirus.

The Canadian Olympic Committee and Canadian Paralympic Committee issued a statement Sunday night on the “difficult decision” to not send athletes if the Games are held as scheduled, while urging the International Olympic Committee and organizers of the Tokyo Games — set to start July 24 — to delay the Olympics by one year.
