Sun West Welcomes Government Guidelines for Students Returning to School

The Minister of Education has provided guidelines to Saskatchewan school divisions to help with the process of Saskatchewan Pre-K to Grade 12 students returning to school in September 2020.

“The government’s guidelines will be useful,” stated Karen Itterman, Chair of the Sun West Board of Education, “they along with the work we have already been doing on the re-entry process will be very helpful in making sure all is ready to welcome back our students when they return to school.”

This fall school will again be mandatory and teachers will deliver the provincial curriculum. Schools will be open and teachers will deliver education from schools.

“Sun West recognizes that while many students and parents are very excited about returning to school there are students and parents who will have concerns about health and safety and may prefer to continue their education away from schools. Sun West will be ready to accommodate students who feel safer learning from home,” explained Itterman.

While the government has provided general guidelines it is still up to school divisions to develop the detailed plans and policies to implement these measures for day-to-day school activities. “Fortunately Sun West’s senior leadership in consultation with our school-based administrators, teachers, Board of Education and School Community Councils has been working collaboratively on contingency plans already,” stated Itterman, “parents and students can be assured that our plans will be thorough and consistent with the direction of Saskatchewan’s Chief Medical Health Officer.”

“We know that parents, students and staff will have many questions,” said Itterman, “and Sun West will be communicating the details and answering questions as the plans develop further. What is important to remember is that we are all working together to make sure our students receive a quality education while also taking measures that will protect not only their health and safety but that of their communities and the entire province.”
