Former Glidden Author Pens Second Book of Poetry

Nostalgia is one of the first words that springs to mind when reading Beverly Dick née Filyk’s latest self-published book Memories of a Small-town Girl in the 40s and 50s. My Time in Rhyme.

For many of us, growing up in a small community is the norm however, with TV, smartphones and the internet, children are growing up differently from Dick. So, it is this reason, coupled with watching her two young grandsons Sajja and Tawan, grow up that spurred her on to write her second book.

“My two young grandchildren, who I’ve dedicated the book to, are growing up so differently from me, so I’ve written this book for them. For me, I grew up in Glidden, and when I think back, it brings back good memories. You know, the days of no running water, no TV, picking bottles, and looking through the Eaton’s catalogue. The book also shares fashion, manners, books, music, and movies of the times.” When asked if she could pick just one favorite memory from this book, she laughed and said “the annual Christmas concert. Oh, and the partylines.”

Dick, who currently resides in Lacadena, Saskatchewan, started writing her book of poetry by hand before eventually typing the 249 pages out on the computer.

“I also did the cover myself. There is a photo of me, and small pictures of things like stockings and cat-eye glasses that bring back many memories.” In addition to the poems, there are three pages of autographs and 16 pages of photos of her with people from Glidden, which Dick contacted to gain their permission to use, and of course, they were happy to oblige.

However, this isn’t the first time Dick has taken pen to paper. In 2012 she also self-published her first book Prairie Life, which she successfully sold in McNally Robinson and the Western Development Museum in Saskatoon. She also did readings in many libraries and Christmas bazaars around the west central area. Although this year due to COVID, Dick will be unable to participate in these events, she still will be giving her book to family and friends while also placing it for sale at the RM of Newcombe in Glidden, Prairie Rose Floral and Gifts in Kindersley, Rust and Re’styled in Rosetown, Creekside Country Home Decor & Antiques in Delisle, Pioneer Co-op in Kyle, and Central Plains Co-op in Eston. The book will also be available for purchase at McNally Robinson and Soul Paper in Saskatoon. These books will be available for purchase around Dec. 16th.

“My hope for this book is that people can just curl up with it and that they enjoy reading it. That it brings back fond memories of the good old days.”
