A Great Show and Shine!

I am so glad I’m a heavy guy!
“Why is that, Kevin?”
“Because the wind is very strong, Virginia.”

And so, Sunday, June 1, was a wild day for being outside and taking in the Flatlanders Show & Shine at the Kindersley Mall. All manner of cars and trucks were on display, and it was very cool to see these hot rods and souped-up vehicles.

Many hours of sweat and labour made some of these cars and trucks look like they had just driven out of a showroom. With all kinds of colours and styles to see, it was awesome talking to some of the owners and listening to their stories—the time passed quickly!

One thing I had never seen before was an R.C.M.P. Suburban on display, and a far-sighted officer was letting kids paint the vehicle with washable paint. How cool is that? Probably the only time you can legally vandalize a police vehicle! It shows that the police are trying to have more positive interactions with the younger generation.

The SHA ambulance on display was equally busy, with many people wanting to see what goes on and what equipment is actually in an ambulance. The EMTs were encouraging and helpful, explaining the various types of equipment, what it did, and what they do.

A bouncy castle was set up inside the old liquor board store, and even some students were doing face painting, which was very popular.

Outside, the 290 Press Café was set up and serving your favourite coffees and teas, etc., and around the front of the building, Kelly Skapac from the Emerald Lounge at the golf course was serving hot dogs and burgers, etc. The local radio station was also there, providing tunes to listen to.

Nancy Ternes and Trevor Leibel from the mall were busy doing PR work and draws for prizes. D’Shae Bussiere and her son Colton were helping with the draws and encouraging one and all to fill out a slip. The draws were held every hour, and many people lined up to put their names in the drum.

All in all, I think it was a very successful day, as the mall parking lot was full and people milled about, looking at all the vehicles. It is certainly nice to see the new mall owners doing something in and for our community! Hats off to them and to everyone who came out—either as a classic vehicle enthusiast or a “vendor.” Well done!
