Canada Issues Recall of Some Caffeinated Drinks

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has recently announced a recall for six additional energy drinks due to non-compliance issues with caffeine content and labeling requirements. The recall notice was published on Friday, and it applies to the following products: “Bang: Potent Brain and Body Fuel,” “C4” energy drink, “Cocaine” energy supplement, “Fast Twitch” energy drink, “Ghost” energy drink, and “Ryse Fuel” energy drink.

All flavors of these brands containing caffeine and lacking bilingual English and French labeling are affected by the recall. This action comes shortly after the agency previously recalled six caffeinated drinks, including Prime Energy, which is associated with American social media personality and wrestler Logan Paul and British YouTube star KSI. Despite some of the recalled products, like Prime Energy, not being officially distributed in Canada, they have found their way onto Canadian store shelves through unauthorized importation from the U.S.

The CFIA cited non-compliance with caffeine content and labeling as reasons for the earlier recall, and their ongoing investigation could potentially lead to further product recalls. According to the latest notice, there have been no reported adverse reactions related to the consumption of the recalled energy drinks. However, the CFIA warns that excessive caffeine intake can have detrimental health effects for children, pregnant and breastfeeding individuals, as well as those who are sensitive to caffeine.

For instance, Prime Energy, which has faced scrutiny in other countries, contains 200 milligrams of caffeine per can, equivalent to the caffeine content of six cans of Coke or two Red Bulls. Health Canada previously reported that Prime Energy exceeds the regulated acceptable caffeine limit of 180 mg per serving and should not be sold.
