New Provincial Stunting and Racing Penalties Introduced
Now in effect, drivers in Saskatchewan caught stunting, racing, or excessively speeding will face a 30-day vehicle impoundment and an immediate seven-day license suspension. SGI clarified that excessive speeding refers to driving 50 km/h or more above the speed limit, or twice the posted limit. These harsher penalties were initially introduced in October 2022.
In addition to impoundment and license suspension, the province is also increasing fines. The fine for stunting has risen to $580 from $150. A first offence for street racing now incurs a $580 fine, previously $205, escalating to $1,400 for a second offence, and $2,100 for a third and any subsequent offences.
SGI listed several actions that could lead to these penalties, including stopping or slowing down to disrupt the flow of traffic, weaving through lanes at high speeds to overtake other vehicles unsafely, or pursuing other vehicles.
