Celebrate Western Development Museum Day on April 2
The Government of Saskatchewan has proclaimed April 2, 2024, Western Development Museum Day in the province in recognition of their 75th anniversary.
“Congratulations on 75 years of making memories and preserving our community’s rich history,” Minister of Parks, Culture and Sport Laura Ross said. “Whether it is marveling at the power of massive steam engines, standing in the shadow of an iconic prairie grain elevator or learning about early transportation on the prairies – the Western Development Museum is home to more than 75,000 artifacts – each with a unique and interesting Saskatchewan story.”
With four facilities located in North Battleford, Saskatoon, Yorkton and Moose Jaw – the Western Development Museum (WDM) fosters understanding about the economic and cultural development of western Canada.
As they celebrate 75 years of sharing Saskatchewan stories and memories, the WDM invites you to join in their anniversary celebrations on Tuesday, April 2, from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm with special 75¢ admission all day.
“For 75 years, the WDM has been connecting people with Saskatchewan’s rich heritage,” WDM Board Chair Orlanda Drebit said. “Each WDM location offers a unique opportunity to step back in time and connect with our shared histories. We invite everyone to come and explore all the WDM has to offer as we look to the past and plan for the future.”
The WDM was established on April 2, 1949, when the Western Development Museum Act was passed in the Legislature.
“The WDM has experienced many changes over the last 75 years, all of which build upon our founders’ vision of a museum network focused on our economic and cultural histories,” WDM CEO Joan Kanigan said. “What has not changed is our commitment to serving the people of Saskatchewan and sharing the unique and diverse stories of the people who call Saskatchewan home.”
Each WDM location will have 75th anniversary-themed seek and finds, a WDM history video playing and more. Cupcakes will be served at 2:00 pm (while supplies last).
