KFD Explains How to Use Fire Blankets

Hello, Cody Phinney back for another update from the Kindersley Fire Brigade. Recently, our members took part in a full day training exercise out at our training grounds on the west side of town. It was a full day consisting of vehicle extrication drills, structure fire tactics, as well as search and rescue techniques. We plan on putting on these comprehensive training exercises at least every few months to not only practice our techniques, but to see which areas we may need to focus on specifically for future training.

Our PubEd team was out with our Public Education Trailer at the Evergreens Community complex in early April. Our team toured groups of residents through the trailer, primarily focusing on kitchen safety, and what to do in the event of a fire. They also handed out fire blankets to the residents generously sponsored for them by Candy Gordon! Our team will be at Dawnview Court and Caleb in the next couple of weeks to have their residents go through the trailer as well. We will also have fire blankets for sale in the near future, watch for updates coming soon!

Speaking of fire blankets, do you know how to use them? Fire blankets can be a very valuable tool during a fire. Fire blankets should be attached somewhere accessible in high fire potential areas, like a kitchen or garage. To use a blanket you only need to pull the straps on the bags and shake the blanket out so it is completely unfolded and ready to use. Roll the blanket over your hands to protect them and carefully set the blanket over the fire taking special care to smother as much of the fire as possible to keep air from getting to it. Once the fire has been contained, call 9-1-1 for further assistance. Fire blankets are ideal for small kitchen fires, fires in a container, or small flammable liquid fires.
