It was a beautiful day to walk around at SonShine Kennels with Barbe Dunn. She and her husband Dennis have been “boarding” dogs and cats for 25 years and they absolutely love what they do.
They took over from Pastor Lynn from the Free Methodist Church who had a “rescue” shelter and was moving and looking for someone to take over. That was in 1998 and they haven’t looked back.
They have been in their current location now for 20 years and have made additions and are continuing with renovations and have room for 23 large dogs and 16 smaller dogs (with some room left for cats)!
Barbe decided to also become a groomer and that is another service they offer. Some pets require a little more TLC but they come around and allow her to do her thing with them. She finds this part of her job satisfying and loves all the pets that she comes into contact with. Grooming can be done in-home but those requests are few and far between.
Another great part of the business is meeting so many nice people. They make the job easier and because this is a highly personal service, some people are a little hesitant to leave their pet, so establishing a bond and trust with the pets is most important.
The dogs have a fair bit of outdoor time and that helps to make them feel less cooped up and run off some energy!
Barbe also said that any and all pets coming to board here MUST have all their shots and kept up to date. This is as easy as the vet emailing the information the Barbe and she has a great relationship with our vet clinic.
