It’s the season for giving, and local Kerrobert residents Lori Zerr and Kimberley Wack along with a group of volunteers have been spreading some Christmas joy to Kerrobert seniors.
The idea is simple, people wanting to participate can visit the “Santa for Seniors” tree in the Kerrobert Courthouse, and choose a tag that has a local seniors name and their wish list on it. Participants can then drop off their gift at D’Lux Archery & Hardware in Kerrobert until December 19th, after which the gifts will be delivered to seniors in the Hillside Lodge, Pioneers Haven, and Kerrobert Long Term Care.
“A friend shared a post on Facebook about another town doing this, and a couple of us decided to see if we could get Kerrobert to do it. A few phone calls and texts later, and it was all lined up!” says Zerr.
Due to the ongoing pandemic and restrictions, many seniors have been feeling the effects of isolation, so Zerr simply wants them to know they are in the local community’s thoughts. “We feel seniors are having a hard time with having no visitors in long term care, not being able to see loved ones and the unknown of what Christmas might be.”
So far the turnout has been fantastic, and while residents can take a tag off the tree until December 12th, Zerr isn’t sure there will be any left by then. “The response has been great like we knew it would be. Everyone in Kerrobert has stepped up and asked how they can help. We’re not sure if there will be names left on the tree for the Festival of Trees on the 12th, but that means all seniors will have a little something extra to open on Christmas. ”
As for future projects like these, Zerr isn’t sure what is possible but says if this is something Kerrobert residents ant to keep participating in, it’s a definite possibility
