Wolseley, Sask. In for a Chance to Win Kraft Hockeyville
Over the past 18 years, Kraft Hockeyville has awarded over $4.8 million to 97 communities across Canada and now, Wolseley, Saskatchewan is hoping to become this year’s winner.
Wolseley joins Elliot Lake, Ontario; Cochrane, Alberta; and Enderby, BC, as finalists in the hopes of being the grand prize winners of Kraft Hockeyville, where they will host an NHL game and win $250,000 for arena upgrades.
When asked by Kraft Hockeville about their area and town, here is what they shared (submitted by Ainsley L.)
Tell us about your community’s spirit as well as its passion for hockey. Can you describe or explain examples of how this came to life?
The Wolseley Sportsplex has a longstanding history with hockey in the community. The Sportsplex is a gathering place for the community members and from our neighboring towns. The Wolseley Mustangs Junior C team was revived back in 2017 and brought a sense of community that was missing from the town. Shortly the Mustangs under 7 team was brought to life and offered younger hockey players in the town the opportunity to play hockey. The Sportsplex brings everyone together to share the love of hockey and cheer on your home team but also provides the opportunity to catch up with old friends…
Tell us about your arena. Why is it important to you, your family, and your community?
My family and I have a long history with the Wolseley Sportsplex. My dad grew up playing hockey in the Sportsplex on various teams including the Wolseley Winterhawks. In 2017 he took up the opportunity to coach the Wolseley Mustang Junior C team. Getting to see my dad take part in a sport that he is passionate about is something that I am grateful to experience. My dad and several other volunteers spend many days and weeks looking after getting the ice in and preparing for the season, and they do so all as volunteers…
Explain how your community will use the $250,000 to upgrade and improve your arena.
The Sportsplex requires a new artificial ice plant. We have made do with the plant that we have for many years as it continuously breaks down and requires repair. The volunteers spend many hours putting in ice, looking after it, and repairing the plant when it breaks down. The money would make a huge difference in being able to keep ice in the rink and save stress on the people who help to run the sportsplex…
