Mystery Box Challenge #5
The residents and staff of the Group Homes were once again getting creative in the kitchen! For our fifth edition of the Chopped Mystery Box Challenge, each house received hotdogs, popcorn kernels, dry mustard, mangos, peppers, cream cheese, and diet 7-up. The boxes of ingredients were dropped off at 9:00 am and the meals had to be prepared and delivered to the Activity Centre for judging by 12:15 pm.
Group Home 3 was very excited to receive hotdogs as an ingredient as Trevor has been requesting them since our first challenge one year ago. Group Home 1 did not share in the enthusiasm of hotdogs and when you look at their plate, you would have never guessed there were hotdogs in the recipe! Group Home 2 took it in stride and though they were few in numbers, their dish was also very unexpected!
Our judges for the challenge, Cathy Lewellin and Elice Fuhr, former staff members along with Mayor Rod Perkins volunteered without knowing anything about what they would be tasting. The judges were impressed with the imagination and variety of dishes created from the Mystery Box ingredients.
The winning dish, with the highest overall points and Best Taste from Group Home 3 was baked loaded Philly dogs with sauteed peppers and onions, shredded cheese and a mustard herb cream cheese drizzle served with mustard, dill and parmesan seasoned popcorn and a fruity mango drink. Great work everyone!!
In second place, Group Home 1 served hotdog dumplings with honey siracha mustard sauce, slaw with mango and sparking 7-Up dressing, mango floats and cream cheese popcorn balls for dessert. They made a great transformation of the ingredients and some of the judges went back to finish off their salads! This great dish brought them the award for Best Presentation.
The final dish was a hotdog and rice stuffed pepper with seasoned cream cheese baked with shredded cheese and mango and served on a bed of seasoned popcorn from Group Home 2. They received the award for Most Creative for their use of the ingredients, they cooked the rice in 7-up, something I am planning to try out.
This has been a very popular event over the past year as our residents and staff deal with many changes to their routines due to the pandemic. We are very grateful to everyone who has taken part by judging, suggesting basket ingredients, making kind comments on our posts, and interacting and engaging the individuals receiving supports in any way through this trying time.
