Patzer: My Thoughts on Bill C-10
You may not have heard of Bill C-10, but you need to be aware of how it will impact your online freedoms.
This Bill, introduced by the Liberals, was amended at Committee and now gives sweeping power to the CRTC to regulate the internet, including the social media and apps of individual users, with no clear guidelines for how that power will be used. I’m starting to wonder if the Liberals are using 1984 as a playbook, as opposed to the cautionary tale George Orwell intended it be.
Conservatives proposed protecting individual users and smaller players in the market by exempting streaming services and social media users with low revenues. However, the Liberals rejected this common-sense approach.
This is unacceptable in a society that values its freedom, and I will certainly be voting against this Bill at third reading.
