Columbus Blue Jackets Name Dorsett as Player Development Coach

After being forced into retirement due to a cervical-disc herniation former NHLer Derek Dorsett vowed to return to the game in some capacity.

Dorsett, 34, who recorded 51-76-127 and 1,314 penalty minutes over a 10-year NHL career with the Blue Jackets, Rangers and Vancouver Canucks from 2008-18, has recently been named “player development coach” with the Columbus Blue Jackets, alongside former teammate Mark Letestu.

With Dorsett wanting to learn the coaching side, in the last half of a COVID-19 affected and reduced 2020-21 season, he joined the Medicine Hat Tigers as an assistant coach. In addition to that, six months ago, Dorsett reached out to former teammate and new Blue Jackets director of player development Rick Nash, and general manager Jarmo Kekalainen, expressing his desire to return to the player development side.

Becoming a player development coach is the first step in Dorsett’s plan to eventually help patrol an NHL bench.

During his career, the Kindersley native was selected by Columbus in the seventh round, 189th overall, in the 2006 NHL Draft and posted 27-38-65 and 727 penalty minutes in 280 career contests with the club from 2008-13.
