The weekend in the SJHL began Friday night with five games on the docket and the teams at the top of the standings early on this season were hoping to continue their strong starts to the campaign.
Humboldt 3 Nipawin 2
In a re-match of last year’s first round series, the Humboldt Broncos and Nipawin Hawks met at the cage in Nipawin. The two clubs went back and forth all night, but it would be Patrick Lanthier netting the game winner 6:42 into the 3rd period to help vault the Humboldt Broncos to a 3-2 win and improve their record on the season to a perfect 6-0-0-0. The two clubs will meet again Saturday night in Humboldt at the EPA.
Melfort 3 Kindersley 2 OT
After spending a good portion of the start of the campaign at home, the Melfort Mustangs hit the road for a battle with the Kindersley Klippers this weekend at the West Central Events Centre in Kindersley. Melfort had a 2-0 lead heading into the 3rd, but Kindersley would claw back with a pair of their own in the final 20 minutes of regulation to force overtime. However, in the extra frame, it would be Rhett Hamilton playing hero for the Mustangs, scoring his 2nd of the season to give Melfort a 3-2 win in overtime and improve their record to 7-0-0-0. The Mustangs and Klippers will meet again Saturday night at the West Central Events Centre in Kindersley.
Flin Flon 7 Estevan 1
The Flin Flon Bombers continue to roll as they tour southern Saskatchewan this week. Friday they earned an impressive 7-1 win over the Estevan Bruins as 6 different scorers found the back of the net in the win. Leading the way for Flin Flon with a pair of goals was Dawson Karol. The Bombers are now 8-0-1-0 on the season and will wrap up their lengthy road trip Saturday night in Weyburn against the Red Wings.
Melville 4 Yorkton 3 SO
The Highway 10 rivalry renewed Friday night in Yorkton and if Friday night’s game was any indication of how the season series will be all year, then fans in the Parkland region will be thoroughly entertained. The back and forth contest would need extra time and ultimately a shoot-out to determine a winner. In the skills competition, Liam Cox-Smith would be the lone goal scorer, giving the Millionaires the 4-3 win and the extra point. The two rivals will meet again Saturday night in Melville.
La Ronge 0 Battlefords 6
For the 2nd time in 3 starts since returning from the Western Hockey League Justen Maric was perfect in between the pipes for the Battlefords North Stars as walked away with an impressive 6-0 win Friday at home over La Ronge. The 19-year-old made 31 saves for his 2nd shutout of the season and 6 different North Stars found the back of the net in the victory. Battlefords will head up to La Ronge for the re-match Saturday evening.
