Tori Stevens Shares Love For Makeup Artistry
Anyone who runs their own business knows it takes up most of your time, but couple that with being in full-time post-secondary education, you wonder how anyone could manage, but Tori Stevens, a university student and talented makeup artist manages to do just that.
Three years ago, after being unable to find someone to do her and her best friend’s grad makeup she decided to grab her brushes and take matters into her own hands. After others saw her work, they reached out, asking if she would do their makeup. “When I say it literally blew up from there it really did. Now I’m insanely busy. I try to be as accommodating with bookings as I possibly can–now I’m in Saskatoon for bridal parties almost every weekend from May-November!”
Combining her natural talent with passion, Stevens fell in love with makeup artistry after receiving a contour kit from her sister for Christmas. “I completely fell in love with the whole process. I started out being self-taught but then began working with a big makeup artist in Saskatoon (Kelsey Rae MUA). I also started taking courses that have bettered me immensely; I have now become certified three times and love continuing my education.”
While most would find it daunting tending to a bridal party and the bride on their special day, Stevens relishes the challenge. “It’s so hard to believe, but I truly love wedding mornings. All my brides probably feel like their mornings were chaotic, but that’s the fun of wedding parties. I love getting to see the grand reveal of the bride all done up.
For anyone considering make-up artistry as a career, Stevens has some advice. “Continue educating yourself! Although you don’t NEED to be certified, continuing to learn new things in this industry is very important. Trends change fast, so it’s best to keep on top of them. I would also say there’s so much more than just being a makeup artist, there’s a lot of inquiries to be answered that aren’t “paid jobs.” There’s social media that is a full-time job in and of itself. It’s a lot of work just like every other job but it is one of the most rewarding jobs.”
Stevens will also be wrapping up her Bachelor of Education this year. “I am working with mainly Pre-K – Grade 2. I absolutely love educating; it’s another true passion.
