Sun West School Division Board of Education Meeting Highlights
The Sun West School Division Board of Education held its regular meeting on Tuesday, October 26nd, 2021 in Rosetown at the Sun West Learning Centre.
- The Board held its annual Organizational Meeting, which is when the Board chair and vice-chair are elected and committee assignments are made for the upcoming year.
- Long-time chair Karen Itterman (Subdivision No. 3) did not seek another term and John Collins (Subdivision No. 6) was elected the new chair. Collins had been serving as vice-chair for the last several years. Michele Whitfield (Subdivision No. 2) was elected as the new vice-chair.
- Board members expressed their gratitude to Itterman for her many years of service as Chair and Collins and Whitfield both indicated they were looking forward to the challenges presented by their new positions.
- There was discussion about potentially developing an Administrative Procedure (AP) regarding requiring Division employees to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination or negative COVID-19 tests. Senior leadership has been tasked with developing a draft AP for further discussion.
- Randy Emmerson, director of education, reported that online training for the provincial government’s Mental Health First Aid course has been going well. Approximately 30 Sun West teachers have already completed the training. Through this training it is expected that every Saskatchewan school will have at least one staff member trained to ensure students have access to mental health resources and help remove the stigma around mental health.
- The Board prepared for the upcoming Saskatchewan School Boards’ Association (SSBA) annual meeting that is scheduled for November. Preparation included reviewing proposed resolutions, committee recommendations and bylaw amendments.
The next regular meeting of the Board of Education is scheduled for November 23.
