Living in the Prairies, we are accustomed extreme weather. Minus 40? No problem, just plug your car in and put on an extra layer. Plus 30 or above? Head to the lake! Zero degrees? Time to wear your shorts!
So it comes as no surprise that the topic most people are talking about this summer is the weather taking the area by storm.
“July is prime time for severe weather in the prairies and with an active couple weeks coming up, we are going to live up to our name of Land of The living Sky” Jenny Hagan says. “ Something we didn’t see last year until really late in the season due to the lack of moisture the drought brought. This year, ample moisture with the heat packing in is a great environment for storm development.
Throughout the province there have been numerous funnel and tornado sightings. Most recently, on June 29th there were tornados near Foam Lake, Cymric and Manitou Beach. The Foam Lake tornado decimated a multigenerational farm, and there were funnel clouds spotted near Hoosier, Eston, and Mantario.
July 5th brought more a tornado warnings and multiple funnel clouds to Glidden area and North of Marengo.
Eatonia experienced a significant hail storm, where residents reported loonie sized hail while flooding between Rosetown and Zealandia has damaged crops and washed out roads.
“While it seems a lot more active this year this is pretty typical of weather patterns we have seen in the area years prior. The trend looks to continue into much of July.”
