Eston Firefighter April Matthewson
Hey, I’m April Matthewson and have been on the Eston FD for 4 1/2 years.
What inspired you to become a firefighter?
I have always liked a challenge so when I was asked if I wanted to join the department I was excited for this new adventure and then fell in love with it. The lights, sirens and adrenaline.
I remember going to my first accident and realizing I needed to know more to be able to help. I took my first responder and EMR and was able to work locally with our EMS service. I went back to school to get my Primary Care Paramedic and have been able to continue working in our region and also volunteer with the FD.
I love being a part of both services and knowing my team and the equipment that might be needed in an emergency. I’m also a Mom and it’s been amazing how my kids have adapted to the uncertainty of me not knowing when or if I will get called out or be back in time for supper, school activities or even tucking them in.
What is your most memorable moment?
I don’t know if I have a most memorable call because each call I have taken away something. I can remember exactly where I was and what I was doing for every call that has come in. The uncertainty of each call with little to no information and we leave whatever we are doing to respond. I yell Fire Call as loudly as I can and I Love You and run out the door.
I’ve also learned you can never know enough, and to keep an open mind. Sometimes equipment can fail or we don’t have enough members but we still need to get the job done because our community is counting on us. I’ve also learned to take a step back, take a breath and remember why you are there.
What is the biggest challenge facing fire services today?
The biggest challenge for me has been with public education the past few years. We have not been able to get into the schools and preschools like we normally have been able to. I love seeing the kids eyes light up when they get to climb into the trucks for the first time. Cause what kid doesn’t want to be a firefighter!
