Another Record Year for Provincial Agricultural Exports
Saskatchewan’s agriculture industry has once again achieved record-breaking agri-food exports in 2022 with a total value of $18.4 billion. The leading agri-food export commodities included canola oil, non-durum wheat, canola seed, lentils, durum, and dry peas. The top five international market destinations for these exports were the United States, China, Japan, Mexico, and Algeria.
Agriculture Minister David Marit praised the success of the industry, calling it a “model for reliability and innovation.” The record-breaking export figures demonstrate the progress made towards the $20 billion agri-food export target set in the 2030 Growth Plan. The province’s focus on higher-value processed products has also contributed significantly to its export success, with canola oil as the top export and canola meal as the seventh-leading. The target of increasing agriculture value-added revenue to $10 billion is becoming increasingly attainable.
Saskatchewan’s strong economic growth is largely attributed to the growth in its agriculture exports. Merchandise exports in December 2022 saw a 23.8% increase compared to December 2021, making it the second highest increase among provinces, seasonally adjusted. Total merchandise exports in 2022 were valued at over $52 billion, a 41.7% increase from the previous year. Trade and Export Development Minister Jeremy Harrison emphasized the province’s ability to meet the needs of the world, and the impressive export numbers are evidence of this. The province will continue to expand exports, open new markets, and promote its story on a global scale with the help of trade and investment offices around the world.
