According to the federal government, approximately 6.6 million unsafe vehicles are currently on the road, despite having unresolved safety recalls.
Transport Canada conducted an analysis in June, revealing that about one in five of the 33.3 million vehicles registered as of 2019 still have outstanding recalls and continue to be used on the streets and highways. This poses potential risks to both the vehicle occupants and other road users.
To address this concern, the department is proposing new regulations. Companies that issue safety recalls would be required to promptly post relevant information on their websites to increase awareness and address the defect. Additionally, car companies would need to provide a lookup tool on their websites that allows vehicle owners to check their inspection numbers and obtain recall information.
Ian Jack, the vice-president of public affairs at the Canadian Automobile Association, points out that only a minority of vehicle owners are aware of recalls, particularly when it comes to second-hand cars, as the new owner may not have direct communication with the dealership. It is worth noting that many recalls involve minor issues that may not be urgent or life-threatening.
