Former Humboldt Bronco Ty Smith, Girlfriend Kat Kastner Win The Amazing Race Canada
Ty Smith, a former Humboldt Broncos player, and his girlfriend Kat Kastner claimed the championship title on Tuesday’s episode of The Amazing Race Canada.
Smith, who had been a member of the team during the tragic 2017-18 collision involving a semi that claimed 16 lives and left 13 others, including himself, injured, is now 25 years old. He made a triumphant return to the ice for the Broncos in the subsequent season, playing in 10 games before deciding to step away to prioritize his recovery and mental well-being.
The television show is recorded well in advance of its airing, which meant that the victorious couple had to keep their win under wraps until the entire season had been broadcast.
“As you can imagine, many of my friends tried to coax me with extra cocktails to spill the beans,” Smith quipped.
“It’s such a relief to finally share the news,” he added.
“We discovered so much about ourselves and our relationship. We didn’t have much of a choice; we had to learn quickly,” Kastner commented.
For their first-place finish and victory on the show, the couple secured a prize package that includes $250,000, two 2023 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 vehicles, and a trip around the world.
“It was an incredibly meaningful journey, and I believe it’s the people who made up this journey, whether it’s the production team or our fellow racers, that made it so special,” Smith concluded.
