Financial Aid Coming for Alberta Livestock Producers Affected by Drought

The governments of Alberta and Canada have jointly allocated $165 million to assist livestock producers impacted by drought and severe weather conditions.

This aid program, known as the Canada-Alberta Drought Livestock Assistance initiative, is primarily designed to aid livestock producers who raise grazing animals.

RJ Sigurdson, the Minister of Agriculture for Alberta, has stated that this program will enable those in need to request financial support to compensate for the losses they have suffered while managing and caring for their breeding herds. Eligible producers have the potential to receive up to $150 per head for their breeding animals.

In this cost-sharing agreement, the federal government is contributing $99 million, while Alberta is contributing an additional $66 million.

Sigurdson has acknowledged that it has been a challenging year for many livestock producers and expressed optimism that this program will provide crucial support until the next season.

“This year’s drought and excessive heat has resulted in our ranchers facing extra costs due to lost grazing days. We recognize their stress as the winter-feeding months approach,” Sigurdson said.

“This program will help alleviate some of the cost pressures, and support producers in protecting their livelihoods while they continue to put food on tables.”
