African-Canadian/Black History Month Proclaimed in Province

February has been proclaimed as African-Canadian/Black History Month in Saskatchewan, to honour and recognize the legacy of African-Canadians across the province.

African-Canadian/Black History Month is an opportunity to learn more about the many accomplishments and contributions made by persons of African heritage to Saskatchewan and the rest of Canada.

“In Saskatchewan, our provincial motto: From Many Peoples Strength, emphasizes the importance of reflecting on the strong history and legacy of diverse communities who have helped build our great province,” Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Laura Ross said. “Persons of African Heritage have contributed greatly to the strong economic, social and cultural fabric that we proudly enjoy in Saskatchewan today. We thank the Saskatchewan African Canadian Heritage Museum for raising awareness on this important history and continuing to support inclusive and diverse communities.”

For 2024, the theme being used by the Saskatchewan African Canadian Heritage Museum (SACHM) “Black resistance”, which celebrates how African-Canadian people have resisted oppression, discrimination and prejudice throughout history.

This year also marks the 20th Anniversary of the Saskatchewan African Canadian Heritage Museum.

“We appreciate the Government of Saskatchewan for recognizing and proclaiming African-Canadian/Black History Month in Saskatchewan,” SACHM Executive Director Carol LaFayette-Boyd said. “It is important to acknowledge the contributions African-Canadians have made to our province and to understand the vital roles played in our history. With the theme of “Resistance” SACHM’s hope is that all citizens will continue to resist racism, prejudice and discrimination and instead embrace diversity, inclusion and equity.

“As 2024 is the last year of the United Nations declaration of International Decade for People of African Descent, SACHM continues to be optimistic that the theme of recognition, justice and development is occurring and continues in Saskatchewan.”

SACHM will be hosting several events during the month, with celebrations concluding at Government House on February 24.
