Kirsten Elder Bringing PowerPlay Young Entrepreneurs to Elizabeth School

The students of Elizabeth Middle School are once again looking forward to PowerPlay Young Entrepreneurs, an educational program that helps students in grades 4 through 8 develop an entrepreneurial mindset. Students have fun gaining real-life career experience by exploring the world of business.

As they build their own independent business ventures, they set and achieve goals, acquire confidence and develop practical life skills. They put their plans into action at the Young Entrepreneur Show, a dynamic event where they interact with customers and earn money. By donating a portion of their profits to charity, they also discover the impact of giving.

Designed to be flexible and inclusive, PowerPlay Young Entrepreneurs effectively supports learners with a diverse range of competencies and learning styles.

“Last year in Kindersley, I started PowerPlay with my grade 5 students and the response from students, staff, parents and the community were overwhelmingly positive. From this, I knew I had to do the program again this year and bring the two other teachers on board. With local donations from Community Futures and Simplot, students have been working hard on making their business plan, advertising posters, and their products to showcase at our tradeshow on June 20th. From students’ earnings, they donate at least 10% of their profit to a local charity that we have chosen. Our students feel very passionate about the charity and I’m proud to see them wanting to help others in our community,” shared Kirsten Elder, grade five teacher at Elizabeth Middle School

Some examples of products this year are NHL bracelets, scented candles (with a mystery gift inside), lava lamps, jewelry holders, mini sticks, hydro-dipped baseballs and golf balls, scented lotion, multi-coloured crayons, fishhooks and a whole lot more 🙂!
