Eston’s “After the Bell” Program Making Afternoons a Little More Fun!
The town of Eston has something new and exciting for its kids — “After the Bell” is a free program for children and youth that’s making after-school time a place where kids learn, play, and make new friends.
Run by Jenny Pittman and Sandi Toner, After the Bell offers all kinds of cool activities. “We aim to encompass all areas of growth and development such as arts and culture, crafts, outdoor play, and physical activity,” they shared.
Jenny Pittman knows a lot about fun activities — she’s been organizing them since 2008! Now, she’s Recreation Coordinator for the Eston Health Center. Sandi Toner, who helps kids and families feel happy and healthy through her role as the Mental Health and well-being coordinator for the Sun West School Division, and who started volunteering in a Drop in Centre at 16 herself, has joined her.
Together, Jenny and Sandi have over 40 years of experience!
The idea for After the Bell came from Jenny and Sandi’s wish to see more kids enjoying a wider range of recreational activities. “We also wanted to provide programming that anyone could attend without having to worry about a financial cost,” they shared.
After the Bell opens its doors to children aged 6-12 for free after-school programs held at the local rink on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:45 to 5:00 pm. “There are also special events for kids 12 and under, but the little ones (6 and under) need to bring a grown-up with them,” shared Sandi and Jenny.
With the spring and summer months here, Sandi and Jenny are looking forward to holding their first big event—an Easter egg hunt in the park on March 30. Then, in June, there’s going to be a huge end-of-school party at the Museum in Eston with free hot dogs and games. They also hope to offer summer camp in July and are currently looking for volunteers to help with a Kids Community Garden.
