Bowling League Wraps up Season with Awards Banquet

On Sunday night, the Kindersley bowling league wrapped up their 2023-24 season with an awards banquet.

It was a great night with shout-outs for all the teams, and including the league champs. After the Tuesday and Wednesday night playoffs wrapped up earlier in April, the top teams faced off in a five-game showdown to crown the Interleague champion. In the end, the Wednesday squad came out on top and snagged the victory.

Jeff Soveran, the guy behind the Tuesday and Wednesday night action shared that each bowler is ranked in three main categories: high average, high single, and high triple. He also highlighted how the league caters to all skill levels by grouping bowlers based on their averages.

Jeff admits the handicap system can be a bit tricky to get, but it definitely makes for a fair and competitive league. Plus, it’s a cash league, so the law of averages ensures pretty much everyone gets a shot at winning some money.

He mentioned the system that’s been in place for ages was loosely inspired by the National Hockey League. “It used to be called the NHBL,” he said, explaining how teams are organized into two conferences and four divisions. “Depending on the playoff format we pick, we might end the year with matchups like 1 vs 8, 2 vs 7, and so on,” Jeff added, noting that the regular season sometimes even includes jockeying for a bye week.

Every team that gets knocked out of the playoffs still ends up with a cash prize, with the lowest amount this year being $225. As more teams get eliminated, the prizes just get bigger. The grand prize this year was about $6,500.

In addition to the awards, bowlers also recieved Shop Kindersley gift cards. The Interleague champs won a $75 gift card, the runners up getting a $50 card.

All in all it was a great bowling season and already, everyone has their sights set on next year!
