Amazon to Build 1st Canadian Wind Farm Project in Alberta
Tech giant Amazon is investing in it’s first Canadian wind farm. Collaborating with developer Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, the company is set to establish a 495-megawatt capacity wind farm in Vulcan County, located in southern Alberta.
This announcement signifies Amazon’s fourth venture into renewable energy projects in Canada, following the recent inauguration of the Travers Solar Project, the country’s largest-ever constructed solar farm, also situated in southern Alberta.
Together, the Travers Solar Project and the newly unveiled wind farm will contribute to powering Amazon’s local operations in Alberta, encompassing fulfillment centers, sortation centers, delivery stations, and the Amazon Web Services data center.
Amazon has previously invested in a smaller solar farm in Newell County, Alta., and a rooftop solar energy project at an Amazon delivery station near Edmonton in Nisku.
As part of a broader trend among major corporations, Amazon, like others, is pursuing long-term renewable electricity contracts, known as power purchase agreements, to fulfill its environmental commitments. The Alberta electricity market has experienced a notable rise in corporate power purchase agreements, contributing to the swift expansion of the renewable energy sector in the province.
Amazon has pledged to power its operations entirely with renewable energy by 2030 and indicates progress ahead of schedule. Globally, the company is involved in 479 wind and solar projects.
Notable companies besides Amazon, such as RBC, Shopify, Telus, and Ikea, have also entered into renewable power purchase agreements in Canada in recent years.
