Better Together Awareness Day at Baker Park, August 14th
Residents are invited to join the Better Together group on Saturday, August 14th at 1 p.m. to help hand out information about the Better Together initiative to Kindersley businesses and residents.
The walking group is made up of those who are promoting the initiative, which is all about connecting and supporting each other in our community. By opening up conversations, the group aims to improve mental health, deepen our mutual understandings, improve feelings of well-being, decrease loneliness, and enhance social cohesion–a connected community is a healthy community!
The group will head down Main Street, then depending on numbers, other businesses along the highway and near Walmart may be visited. The group aims to visit as many places as possible, encouraging others look for the Better Together t-shirts and strike up a conversation about anything!
Afterwards, at 3 p.m. everyone will return to Baker Park for a BBQ! Burgers, hot dogs, Better Together cookies, chips and drinks are available for purchase, with all proceeds going towards a community “Better Together” Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Workshop later in the year.
There will also be a chance for kids to cool down at the spray park and bounce off some energy in the bouncy castle! And remember, if you have a Better Together t-shirt, please wear it!
The Better Together initiative was formed after Allysa Woodrow and the Battlefords area experienced significant loss and tragedy in 2018 with eight deaths by suicide in seven weeks–five of the losses were youth under the age of 22, and three were senior citizens over the age of 55.
Allysa Woodrow asked the question, “what if we could connect the bookend generations?” With this question, she came up with the idea of the “Better Together” t-shirts and created “Together Tuesday”. Since she launched this idea, every Tuesday, participants throughout Saskatchewan and beyond have begun to build friendships and work together on deeper community connections.
