Kevin Chats With Blain Hilbig

By Kevin Martin

Mr. Blain Hilbig is an extremely likeable and talented guy. He was one of the very first Kindersley Klippers to play here in 1993 – 1994 as a 17 year old. And there was a lot of excitement at the time! They had a young physical team and friendships were made that endure to this day. His billet family was Lyndon, Marlene, and Trent Vanthuyne which made the year a great one.

The kid from Humboldt simply loved sports and came from a very sports minded family, with hockey and baseball being #’s 1 and 2 on their list. After he moved with the Saskatoon Titans to play his 1 year in Kindersley he played for his home town in 1994-95 as an 18 year old and then moved on to Saskatoon to play for the Jr. B Royals as a 19 – 20 year old.

By then he knew he wanted to be a teacher so off to University it was to study physical education and history. After an internship in New Zealand he came back to Saskatchewan and began his teaching career in Big River before moving on to places like Meadow Lake (where he met his wife), Turtleford, Kerrobert and finally Kindersley where he finished as the high school principal. Now he has been promoted to the Superintendent of Education for Sun West School Division and bides his time travelling the area and doing what needs to be done.

He has been coaching hockey every season that he has been teaching and still coaches his daughters U13 AA team (Western Prairie Thunder) and is proud of their 18-0 record! As well, sons Tylin and Ethan lace up the skates for the Jr. Klippers (this is their 2nd year) and both are doing well and making a big impression on coaches and fans alike.

Thank you for sticking around and making Kindersley home!
